Denmark: Supreme Court to Reopen Poker Legalization Case
The Supreme Court of Denmark has recently announced its decision to consider the possibility of poker tournaments legalization in private clubs of Denmark. It is known that the second highest legal body in Denmark, the Landsretten, has adopted a decision to vote against the legalization. The consideration was triggered by an appeal by Frederik Hostrup and the Danish Poker Federation. Hostrup stated he was extremely glad to hear about the Court’s decision. He hopes the result will be quite positive for Danish poker.
Landsretten had previously adopted a decision to prohibit organization of tournament poker with immediate effect, due to that it is kind of gambling, which contradicts Danish law. Then, Hostrup and his lawyer filed for an appeal, which resulted in such a decision. Earlier lots of clubs around Denmark were crowded with poker lovers; after the verdict from Landsretten clubs were forced to make corresponding arrangements in order to evade breaching the legislation.
Luckily for poker clubs, after the Supreme Court has announced its decision to reopen the case former rules have again come into power, which means poker tournaments are yet allowed. Danish poker community hopes to have a satisfactory outcome.
